Eleven Men

Location: Morland - Skellaw Wark

Further Comments: A small group of girls walking home witnessed these men walk by in single file, glowing with a weird yellow light and waving their fists in anger.


 
 


Headless Carpenter

Location: Muncaster - Muncaster Castle
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: Murdered by a jester on the orders of the then owner Sir Ferdinard Pennington, the carpenter (who made the mistake of falling in love with Sir Ferdinard's daughter) was beheaded in the garden, where he now haunts. The jester has also been reported on the site, holding a severed head. The ghost of King Henry is another reported to haunt the castle, hiding from those who took him to London to be murdered.


 
 


White Lady

Location: Naworth - Naworth Castle
Type: Curse
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: Falling in love and becoming pregnant by the lord of the castle, a local girl committed suicide after being shunned by him after their love affair. Though her mother then cursed the evil lord (resulting in his death, and that of the estate's future heir), the young lass still returns to the site.


 
 


Nicholson

Location: Penrith - Gibbet Hill, six kilometres outside of Penrith (gibbet marked by a stone)
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Winter nights (reoccurring)
Further Comments: Hanged for the murder of his godfather, Nicholson's body was left dangling throughout the winter of 1766 / 1767 as a deterrent to others... Some say it still makes an appearance during harsh winters.


 
 


Disappearing Guest

Location: Penrith - Greystoke Castle
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: A guest here once vanished without trace, leaving all his clothing and belongings. The ghost of the man has been reported several times, reappearing in the same room. Rapping on the wall in the same room has also been reported, thought to belong to a monk who was bricked up alive in the basement.


 
 


Luck of Eden

Location: Penrith - Eden Hall

Date / Time: Still present in the Hall
Further Comments: Stolen from fairies by a former butler, the fifteen centimetre tall cup is now locked away deep within the house - a curse placed by the little folk in retaliation for the theft states that if the beaker breaks, so does the building's luck.


 
 


Cockatrice

Location: Renwick - Church
Type: Cryptozoology
Date / Time: 1733?
Further Comments: This mythical creature, made up of pieces of dragon, serpent and cock, took up residence in the church when it fell into ruin. A local man killed the creature in the early eighteenth century, though locals say it is still seen flying about at dusk.


 

 
 


Stubborn Figure

Further Comments: Though little is known about this ghost, legend says it refused to leave for seven years after an exorcism.


 
 


Cat with Long Tail

Location: Shap - M6 motorway near to junction 39

Date / Time: August 2001
Further Comments: A number of Alien Big Cat sightings have been reported along this stretch of motorway. The ABC reported in this instance was described as possessing a big head and a very long tail.


 
 


One Man and his Dog

Location: Souter Fell - Exact place unknown
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: 1745
Further Comments: Two men witnessed a man with a hound, pursuing several horses along a steep rocky ridge. Man and beasts suddenly vanished - the witnesses were at first concerned that they had all fallen over the edge of a cliff, though were unable to find any bodies.


 
 


Army Marching On

Location: Souter Fell - Side of Mountain visible from Wilton Hall
Type: Environmental Manifestation
Date / Time: 23 June 1744 (reoccurring?)
Further Comments: Over two dozen witnesses saw a mass of troops ascending the mountain on horseback, though there were no real soldiers in the area. The ghostly army had been seen twice before, always on the same date.


 
 


Headless Lass

Location: Stainmore - Stainmore Pass
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: 1937
Further Comments: A driver stuck in snow on this pass went for a quick walk on the moorland while waiting for help. He reported seeing a headless woman sitting upon a white horse. A legend claims this to be the daughter of a Norman landowner who was killed by a Saxon chieftain after kidnapping her.


 
 


Lady in Blue Dress

Further Comments: This ghostly entity has been seen in a bedroom within the inn, and often moves makeup and toiletries around.


 
 


Cloaked Figure

Location: Tebay - Railway tracks, exact location unknown
Type: Unknown Ghost Type
Date / Time: 1967
Further Comments: David Johnson, a steam train enthusiast, accidentally caught a ghostly figure on film as he photographed a locomotive in the village.


 
 


House with Glowing Windows

Location: Thirlmere - Armboth Hall & Thirlmere lake
Type: Environmental Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: After a murder, this house was destroyed - though some people reported that the building was still occasionally seen, with a glowing candle moving past various windows. The Hall is now lost below the waters of the flooded valley of Thirlmere Lake, which is home to a phantom dog which swims through the water.


 
 


Teleporting Relic

Location: Threlkeld - Threlkeld Place

Further Comments: The home of a skull with history unknown, the relic returned home despite several attempts by the property owners to dispose of it. They finally stopped trying, and bricked it up behind a wall.


 
 


Ice

Further Comments: Pieces of ice so large that 'it looked like a flock of sheep from a distance' fell here during a period of snow.


 
 


Long Creature

Location: Wast Water - Water of the lake

Further Comments: England's deepest lake is reportedly home to an unknown creature several metres in length.


 
 


Roman Trio

Location: Whithaven - Moresby Hall
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: 2000s?
Further Comments: Populated quite heavily by the dead, the three Roman soldiers are thought to be accompanied by a Jacobite rebel, a cavalier, and possibly the ghost of a young child found hidden on the site in the late twentieth century.


 
 


Crier of Claife

Location: Windermere - Ferry Nab
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: While the spirit is reportedly exorcised, some still say they can hear ghostly screams and cries coming from the lake late at night. The cause of the commotion has been seen only once, and the witness died of shock a few days later, without ever speaking a word.


 
 


Luck of Workington

Location: Workington - Workington Hall
Type: Legend

Further Comments: This was one of the places which Mary Queen of Scots took refuge in when escaping from the English. To show her thanks, she gave Sir Henry Curwen a wine cup, and it was this item that was deemed to bring the owner great luck. It is worth noting that the hall is now ruined, and the cup long since vanished.

Waiting Wife

Further Comments: Lady de Blenkinsopp is said to wait for her husband to return from the crusades, where he went after a disagreement over gold.


 
 


Marching

Location: Hardknott Pass - Roman Fort
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: 08 May 2007, 12:30h
Further Comments: While exploring the empty ruins of the Roman Fort, two people heard the sound of marching. One of the couple reported it sounded like boots on a hard surface, even though the area is covered in grass. The footsteps lasted no more than 20 seconds before fading away.


 
 


Lantern Bearer

Location: Hawkesdale? - Hawkesdale Hall
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: 31 October (reoccurring)
Further Comments: Having hanged himself in the hall, this young lad holding a lantern appears on Halloween and walks towards the nearby river Caldew, vanishing into its cold waters.


 
 


Boar

Location: Holmrook - Forest
Type: Cryptozoology

Further Comments: Wild boar have been reported living in this area of woodland.


 
 


Dog and Two Women

Location: Kendal - Levens Hall
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: Never seen together, a ghostly woman in pink clothing and another woman in grey have been reported in the area - the latter figure has been known to play with the traffic along the driveway. A little black dog haunts the main staircase, while a local legend states that no male heir will inherit the hall until a white doe is born in the nearby park.


 
 


Moving Floorboards

Location: Kendall - Sizergh Castle

Further Comments: Not happening in living memory, it is claimed one room here had its floorboards removed and scattered on several consecutive nights. Sobs of a phantom woman have also been heard.


 
 


Robert Southey

Location: Keswick - Greta Hall
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: First quarter of twentieth century
Further Comments: Poet Laureate, Southey spent a large part of his life at the hall. His ghost was seen reading a book by lamplight, disappearing when dawn arrived. Another time he was seen looking into a bathroom window (much to the distress of the lady now climbing into the bath).


 
 


Uncountable Stones

Location: Keswick - Castlerigg Stone Circle

Further Comments: These stones refuse to give up their number, always tallying differently if counted (but I make it 33).


 
 


Built for a Soul

Location: Kirkby Lonsdale - Devil's Bridge
Type: Legend - Old Nick
Date / Time: Still stands
Further Comments: The Devil built this bridge, in return for the soul of the first who crossed it. Alas for him, a local woman let her dog run across it first, and so Satan left with his new pet. A more recent story concludes by saying that when a new bridge was constructed in 1932, Satan was so upset that he created rain, hail and snow storms, which delayed its opening.


 
 


Footfalls

Date / Time: Early twentieth century
Further Comments: These footsteps reportedly belong to the nuns which once resided here.


 
 


Giant Eel

Location: Lake Windermere - Waters of the lake
Type: Cryptozoology
Date / Time: August 2006
Further Comments: Steve Burnip and his wife observed an eel-like creature, estimated to be up to six metres long, in the waters of the lake. Steve said the creature had a little head and two humps which protruded from the water.


 
 


Reappearing Skulls

Location: Lake Windermere - Calgarth Hall
Type: Curse
Date / Time: Sixteenth century?
Further Comments: Belonging to a married farming couple, the skulls came back to haunt the person who framed them for a crime that resulted in their execution. No matter how they were destroyed, the grinning skulls always returned to the hall, until the death of the man they cursed.


 
 


Tizzie-Wizzie

Location: Lake Windermere - General area
Type: Cryptozoology
Date / Time: 1996
Further Comments: This creature, reportedly part hedgehog, part squirrel, and part bumblebee, has been reported on and off over the past one hundred years.


 
 


Boggles

Location: Lanercost - Banks of the river
Type: Fairy
Date / Time: Pre nineteenth century
Further Comments: These northern fairies would play merry havoc near the rivers, frightening horses and riders alike.


 
 


Hooded Figure

Location: Little Orton - Gypsy Lonning - area where monastery once stood
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: November 2004
Further Comments: A six foot tall cloaked figure was observed gliding towards a wooded clearing. Animals in the area acted strangely, making a great deal of noise.


 
 


Meg & her Daughters

Location: Little Salkeld - Long Meg stones
Type: Legend
Date / Time: Still standing
Further Comments: A collection of standing stones, these are said to have been a coven of witches turned to stone for their sins.


 
 


Top Hats

Location: Lowther - Askham Hall
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Prior to 1956
Further Comments: The peel tower was once home to ghostly footsteps, and several guests at the property reported, at different times, seeing two phantom men wearing top hats in a bedroom carrying a box. After the removal and destruction of a black cat found mummified in a wall space, the ghostly presence left.


 
 


Sir James Lowther's Coach

Location: Lowther - Lowther Castle
Type: Poltergeist
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: Sir James was blamed when poltergeist activity sprung up around the castle a few days after his death, and also caused a little disruption at his own funeral (in the form of knocking inside his casket). The carriage Sir James travelled in during life was seen and heard moving along the roads near the castle at dangerous speeds, glowing in the dark. This ghost has not been reported since an exorcism.


 
 


Floating Woman

Location: M6 - South of Lake District
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Summer (year not known), 22:30h
Further Comments: A ghostly woman was reported on the hard shoulder, appearing to float just off the ground, as her feet were not there. The apparition was dressed in old fashioned clothing and the witness who drove past said the phantom looked as if she was watching out for something.


 
 


Murdered Girl

Location: Martindale - Henhow Cottage
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Eighteenth century
Further Comments: Both this girl and her unborn child were poisoned by the father, a local preacher. A local man spoke to the entity, who told him she had been murdered, and was obligated to haunt the area for one hundred years.


 
 


White Woman

Location: Maryport - Netherhall Mansion (no longer standing)
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Pre 1973
Further Comments: Before the mansion burnt down, it stood empty for twenty years. The caretaker reported seeing a phantom grey lady within the building, and even though the mansion was boarded up, furnishings and fittings would be found thrown around within. Some believe the grey lady actually started the fire which finally reduced the mansion to a shell which was demolished.


 
 


Crying Baby

Location: Maryport - Dearham Bridge railway station
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: A man once threw his newborn child under a train here, killing the infant. The father was hanged for the crime. Now, as a train is now about to enter the tunnel, the child can occasionally be heard screaming before being hit.


 
 


Black Tombstone Shape

Location: Mealsgate - Low Mill
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Twentieth century
Further Comments: A black shadow resembling a tombstone would appear in one of the bedrooms here, emanating an evil presence. On one occasion malicious laughter was heard coming from the dark shape. There were also reports of objects disappearing for weeks on end, only to turn up in predominant places.


 
 


Grey Horse

Location: Millbeck - Stone water trough
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: 1955
Further Comments: Author Alasdair Alpin MacGregor reported encountering the phantom of a grey horse at an overgrown water trough near Kirkandrews upon Eden. MacGregor relayed his sighting to a local postmaster, who told him reports of the apparition were not uncommon.


 
 


Dragging Sounds

Location: Millom - Commodore public house
Type: Haunting Manifestation

Further Comments: The sound of heavy dragging likened to that of furniture being moved has been reported here.


 

Man in Tall Hat

Location: Cartmel - Priory Gatehouse
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: This figure has been observed standing in the grounds, disappearing if spoken to. Monks are also reported to haunt the area, named as those who have died trying to help people lost and stuck in the nearby sands.


 
 


Friar

Location: Clappersgate - Grey Friars Lodge hotel
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Twentieth century
Further Comments: This phantom friar has been spotted walking down nearby lanes. The hotel itself is reportedly haunted by a bishop; an old thin man dressed in purple, he sits in the dinning room.


 
 


Grey Lady

Location: Cockermouth - Lorton Hall
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Between 5 - 7.30 in the morning
Further Comments: The rustling of a dress have been reported in the early hours of the morning, believed to belong to the lady dressed in grey, who has been seen in the building. She has been identified as Elizabeth, the disabled daughter of the Bragg family who resided here.


 
 


Treasure Guardian

Location: Cockermouth - Tallentire
Type: Haunting Manifestation

Further Comments: A decapitated female ghost was reported to stand guard over a hidden horde of gold near the tower of this building.


 
 


Hidden Fairies

Location: Cockermouth - Castle How - hillfort
Type: Fairy
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: Children digging in the area were said to have unearthed a small fairy house - it later vanished, along with their digging equipment, though two small figures were observed in the area for several days afterwards.


 
 


Radiant Boy

Location: Corby - Corby Castle
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: 1800's
Further Comments: Appearing early in the morning, this ghostly child has golden hair and glows like an angel.


 
 


Vampire

Location: Croglin - Croglin Low Hall
Type: Vampire
Date / Time: 1875
Further Comments: One of the few vampire reports in the UK, this creature attacked a young girl in this building. One of her brothers saw the attack, and shot the monster in the leg. The blood trail enabled them to track it to the village graveyard, where it was dug up and burnt.


 
 


The Grave

Further Comments: A cairn here has been named as a likely burial place of Robin Hood.


 
 


Treasure Sharer

Location: Crosby Ravensworth - Crosby Hall

Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: The entity that took up temporary residence at this building told the owner where to find a hidden horde of treasure and details of his death, before disappearing forever.


 
 


Witch Haunt

Location: Cumrew - Dunwalloght Castle (no longer standing)
Type: Legend
Date / Time: Nineteenth century
Further Comments: The area where this castle once stood was so haunted that locals believed witches would periodically meet there.


 
 


Three Kings

Location: Dacre - Dacre Castle

Further Comments: These three figures return once in a while, re-enacting a scene that happened in the dark ages when they first met to discuss the Norse threat.


 
 


Roaring Train

Location: Dalton in Furness - Old rail track between Goldmire Junction and Millwood Junction
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Twentieth century
Further Comments: Some witnesses allege hearing the sudden sound of an engine and feeling the rush of wind one experiences when a train passes by.


 
 


Wild Men

Location: Dent - Area north of town

Further Comments: Dressed in animal skins and on horseback, the dozens of phantom, wild looking figures are reportedly Viking raiders.


 
 


Silky

Location: Denton Hall - Denton Hall
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: Named after the sound of her silk dress, this spirit was often heard moving around the premises. The ghost may be that of a mistress of a former Duke of Argyll.


 
 


Hand

Location: Dovenby - Wooded area on road between village and Tallentire
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Weather Dependent: Dark, stormy nights
Further Comments: A disembodied hand is reported to reach out from the trees and push passing cyclists from their bikes.


 
 


Adult Puma

Location: Drigg - Shore road
Type: ABC
Date / Time: Summer 2005
Further Comments: Out walking her dog, a woman spotted what she thought was an adult puma standing on the roadside. It ran off through a hedgerow after a few seconds. Another person also spotted the creature in the same area.


 
 


Isir

Location: Eamont Bridge - Cave by the river

Further Comments: This natural dwelling was once home to a giant named Isir, who enjoyed the taste of human meat. His fate is unknown.


 
 


Thomas Nicolson

Location: Edenhall - Beacon Edge Road
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Weather dependent: Stormy nights
Further Comments: Nicolson was found guilty of murdering his godfather and was hanged. His ghost and phantom gallows appear when a storm descends.


 
 


Headless Hound

Location: eggholme - General area

Further Comments: The large black dog which brings death and misfortune in this neighbourhood is reportedly headless.


 
 


Exploding Glasses

Location: Egremont - The Kings Arms
Type: Poltergeist

Further Comments: The pub was besieged by poltergeist activity - the owner was locked in the basement for 20 minutes, a knife was found embedded in the kitchen wall and a glass exploded in the bar.


 
 


Farmer on Pony Back

Location: Egremont - Tarpot area
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: 24 December (reoccurring)
Further Comments: This old man vanished without trace when returning home from an inn on a long forgotten Christmas Eve - both he and his ride are occasionally seen on the anniversary of the mystery.


 
 


Pony with Coffin

Location: Eskdale - Burnmoor Tarn, path leading from village to Wasdale
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Weather Dependent: Misty conditions
Further Comments: Appearing when the mist is thick, this ghostly pony silently and slowly makes its way along the path with a coffin strapped to its back.


 
 


Laughter

Location: Eskdale - Wooded area near Santon Bridge

Date / Time: Mid twentieth century
Further Comments: Several men heard laughter, accompanied by loud barking and screeching, pass overhead when camping in the woods.


 
 


Ann Lamplugh

Location: Eskdale - Irton Hall
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: Ann's ghost, dressed in black, reportedly haunts the building after refusing to give aid to Henry IV, when he asked for help in fleeing his enemies...


 
 


Gilsland Boy

Location: Gilsland - Triermain Castle
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: While living, this young boy became lost on the nearby snow-covered common, and froze to death. His shivering form is now seen by the castle walls, and on the odd occasion will reach out and grab people (this is supposed to mark the witness's impending death, the area of the body touched being the primary area responsible for death).


Coach Fatality

Location: Ambleside - Kirkstone Pass Inn
Type: Haunting Manifestation

Further Comments: This inn claims several ghosts, including a young boy that was killed by a coach outside of the building, a young woman who died trying to travel along the road during a snow storm, and a seventeenth century coachman who lurks around the bar.


 
 


Ringing Bells

Further Comments: Phantom bells have been heard coming from beneath the waters here


 
 


May Marye

Location: Askerton - Askerton Castle
Type: Haunting Manifestation

Further Comments: Once murdered by a lover, now May extracts her revenge by jumping on the backs of passing horses and terrifying their riders. It is reported she once engaged one rider in conversation, making him swear on his life that the topic of discussion would never be revealed to anyone.


 
 


Lord Lonsdale

Further Comments: Driving a phantom coach, the ghost of Lord Lonsdale passes through this location.


 
 


Strangling

Further Comments: While being used by the Woman's Land Army during World War Two, many of the women reported seeing mysterious shadows, hearing weird sounds, and one even reported feeling as if an invisible presence was throttling her.


 
 


Former Worker

Further Comments: A shadowy figure, loud bangs, and a crane which automated itself were all manifestations of what many employees believed to be a former member of the workforce who had killed himself.


 
 


Pterosaur?

Further Comments: A witness reported a large pterosaur-like creature flying above Nursery woods.


 
 


Tall Hairy Creature

Further Comments: A man walking his dog reported seeing a man like creature, just over two metres tall and covered in ginger hair, drinking from a pond in the woods.


 
 


Small Staircase

Further Comments: Too small for normal human use, the stairs are believed to have been designed for fairy use.


 
 


Capelthwaite

Location: Beetham - General area near the river Bela

Further Comments: Also known as a Cappel, this spirit is said to be able to transform into any four legged creature, though it prefers the form of a dog. A local vicar is said to have banished it into the river Bela.


 
 


Headless Hound

Headless Woman

Joseph Wilson

Further Comments: Wilson was a hangman who finally killed himself out of depression. A stone rope was engraved on his headstone as a tribute to his career choice, but after it was stolen, Wilson started to haunt the area. The ghost disappeared after his grave was desecrated.


 
 


Cursed Cranium

Further Comments: Creating havoc whenever removed from the property, the skull was finally walled up in part of the building.


 
 


Bele Sheephead

Location: Broughton Moor - Moor and roads in the area
Type: Legend

Further Comments: A local story recounts how a young girl found her pet lamb killed by a fox - instead of mourning, she drank the blood of the lamb and was turned into a human/sheep hybrid (humeep?). This entity has now achieved urban legend status, preying on unsuspecting motorists and killing them if given the chance. The moor is also said to be haunted by a figure known as Bible John, as he carries a bible in which is hidden a pistol.


 
 


Scalded Woman

Location: Broughton Moor - Wood House (no longer standing)
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: This woman was killed in the boiler room of a house which once stood here - her shade returned and screamed so much that the occupiers fled and the house could not be sold on.


 
 


The British Roswell?

Location: Caldbeck - Cumbrian fells - exact area not known
Type: UFO
Date / Time: 04 March 1954
Further Comments: A disc shaped alien spacecraft crash landed in this area. Three people witnessed the event; a farmer and son who were held by military personnel for two weeks, and a poacher who claimed to have seen two bodies, with 'faces like the Devil's' (the poacher had a breakdown soon after). The RAF (?) removed all evidence of the incident from the area.


 
 


Chained Person

Location: Caldbeck - Rectory

Further Comments: While never seen, this ghost can be heard rattling its chains, trying to escape from unknown bounds.


 
 


Corpse Candle

Location: Caldbeck - Bushay House
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: On several occasions a ghostly light was seen flickering around the garden.


 
 


Horace Wimpole

Location: Carlisle - Woodland near Heatherleigh Hall
Type: Crisis Manifestation
Date / Time: Late nineteenth century?
Further Comments: A former owner of the property wrote that he saw the ghost of Horace riding on a black horse several times, always just prior to the death of a loved one.


 
 


Pourer

Location: Carlisle - Citadel Restaurant
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Mid - late twentieth century
Further Comments: A tall black shape was seen emerging through a wall, pouring itself onto the ground. An old woman wearing grey was also seen here.


 
 


Solway Spaceman

Location: Carlisle - Coastal marshland NW of town
Type: UFO
Date / Time: 24 May 1964
Further Comments: Jim Templeton, while taking family photographs, caught on film a strange white figure wearing what appears to be a spacesuit floating behind his daughter. Jim stated that the figure was not visible at the time of taking the photograph.


 
 


Whitfield

Location: Carlisle - Barrock Hill near Carlisle

Further Comments: An infamous highwayman, Whitfield was finally caught and hanged for murder - but the rope was not tight enough and several days later a passing coachman heard Whitfield crying and moaning, dangling from the noose. To end the suffering, the coachman shot the hanging man; Whitfield's ghost can still be heard today crying for help.


 
 


White Woman

Location: Carlisle - Carlisle Castle
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: 1842
Further Comments: This phantom was once challenged by a soldier on guard duty - she faded in front of him, and he died of shock several hours later.


 
 


Unlucky Art

Location: Carlisle - Cursing Stone, Carlisle Museum
Type: Curse
Date / Time: 2001 onwards
Further Comments: Since the installation of artist Gordon Young's sculpted granite 'Cursing Stone' inscribed with a 16th century curse in one of Carlisle's museums in 2001, misfortune has plagued the city - local farm stock were wiped out by foot-and-mouth disease, a devastating flood occurred, several factories have closed, a boy was murdered in a local bakery and Carlisle United football team dropped a league.
