Headless Carpenter

Further Comments: Murdered by a jester on the orders of the then owner Sir Ferdinard Pennington, the carpenter (who made the mistake of falling in love with Sir Ferdinard's daughter) was beheaded in the garden, where he now haunts. The jester has also been reported on the site, holding a severed head. The ghost of King Henry is another reported to haunt the castle, hiding from those who took him to London to be murdered.

White Lady

Further Comments: Falling in love and becoming pregnant by the lord of the castle, a local girl committed suicide after being shunned by him after their love affair. Though her mother then cursed the evil lord (resulting in his death, and that of the estate's future heir), the young lass still returns to the site.

Nicholson

Further Comments: Hanged for the murder of his godfather, Nicholson's body was left dangling throughout the winter of 1766 / 1767 as a deterrent to others... Some say it still makes an appearance during harsh winters.

Disappearing Guest

Further Comments: A guest here once vanished without trace, leaving all his clothing and belongings. The ghost of the man has been reported several times, reappearing in the same room. Rapping on the wall in the same room has also been reported, thought to belong to a monk who was bricked up alive in the basement.

Luck of Eden

Further Comments: Stolen from fairies by a former butler, the fifteen centimetre tall cup is now locked away deep within the house - a curse placed by the little folk in retaliation for the theft states that if the beaker breaks, so does the building's luck.

Cockatrice

One Man and his Dog

Further Comments: Two men witnessed a man with a hound, pursuing several horses along a steep rocky ridge. Man and beasts suddenly vanished - the witnesses were at first concerned that they had all fallen over the edge of a cliff, though were unable to find any bodies.

Army Marching On

Further Comments: Over two dozen witnesses saw a mass of troops ascending the mountain on horseback, though there were no real soldiers in the area. The ghostly army had been seen twice before, always on the same date.

Headless Lass

House with Glowing Windows

Roman Trio

Further Comments: While the spirit is reportedly exorcised, some still say they can hear ghostly screams and cries coming from the lake late at night. The cause of the commotion has been seen only once, and the witness died of shock a few days later, without ever speaking a word.

Luck of Workington

Further Comments: This was one of the places which Mary Queen of Scots took refuge in when escaping from the English. To show her thanks, she gave Sir Henry Curwen a wine cup, and it was this item that was deemed to bring the owner great luck. It is worth noting that the hall is now ruined, and the cup long since vanished.

Marching

Further Comments: While exploring the empty ruins of the Roman Fort, two people heard the sound of marching. One of the couple reported it sounded like boots on a hard surface, even though the area is covered in grass. The footsteps lasted no more than 20 seconds before fading away.

Lantern Bearer

Further Comments: Having hanged himself in the hall, this young lad holding a lantern appears on Halloween and walks towards the nearby river Caldew, vanishing into its cold waters.

Dog and Two Women

Further Comments: Never seen together, a ghostly woman in pink clothing and another woman in grey have been reported in the area - the latter figure has been known to play with the traffic along the driveway. A little black dog haunts the main staircase, while a local legend states that no male heir will inherit the hall until a white doe is born in the nearby park.

Moving Floorboards

Robert Southey

Further Comments: Poet Laureate, Southey spent a large part of his life at the hall. His ghost was seen reading a book by lamplight, disappearing when dawn arrived. Another time he was seen looking into a bathroom window (much to the distress of the lady now climbing into the bath).

Built for a Soul

Further Comments: The Devil built this bridge, in return for the soul of the first who crossed it. Alas for him, a local woman let her dog run across it first, and so Satan left with his new pet. A more recent story concludes by saying that when a new bridge was constructed in 1932, Satan was so upset that he created rain, hail and snow storms, which delayed its opening.

Giant Eel

Further Comments: Steve Burnip and his wife observed an eel-like creature, estimated to be up to six metres long, in the waters of the lake. Steve said the creature had a little head and two humps which protruded from the water.

Reappearing Skulls

Further Comments: Belonging to a married farming couple, the skulls came back to haunt the person who framed them for a crime that resulted in their execution. No matter how they were destroyed, the grinning skulls always returned to the hall, until the death of the man they cursed.

Tizzie-Wizzie

Further Comments: This creature, reportedly part hedgehog, part squirrel, and part bumblebee, has been reported on and off over the past one hundred years.

Boggles

Hooded Figure

Further Comments: A six foot tall cloaked figure was observed gliding towards a wooded clearing. Animals in the area acted strangely, making a great deal of noise.

Meg & her Daughters

Further Comments: A collection of standing stones, these are said to have been a coven of witches turned to stone for their sins.

Top Hats

Further Comments: The peel tower was once home to ghostly footsteps, and several guests at the property reported, at different times, seeing two phantom men wearing top hats in a bedroom carrying a box. After the removal and destruction of a black cat found mummified in a wall space, the ghostly presence left.

Sir James Lowther's Coach

Further Comments: Sir James was blamed when poltergeist activity sprung up around the castle a few days after his death, and also caused a little disruption at his own funeral (in the form of knocking inside his casket). The carriage Sir James travelled in during life was seen and heard moving along the roads near the castle at dangerous speeds, glowing in the dark. This ghost has not been reported since an exorcism.

Floating Woman

Further Comments: A ghostly woman was reported on the hard shoulder, appearing to float just off the ground, as her feet were not there. The apparition was dressed in old fashioned clothing and the witness who drove past said the phantom looked as if she was watching out for something.

Murdered Girl

Further Comments: Both this girl and her unborn child were poisoned by the father, a local preacher. A local man spoke to the entity, who told him she had been murdered, and was obligated to haunt the area for one hundred years.

White Woman

Further Comments: Before the mansion burnt down, it stood empty for twenty years. The caretaker reported seeing a phantom grey lady within the building, and even though the mansion was boarded up, furnishings and fittings would be found thrown around within. Some believe the grey lady actually started the fire which finally reduced the mansion to a shell which was demolished.

Crying Baby

Further Comments: A man once threw his newborn child under a train here, killing the infant. The father was hanged for the crime. Now, as a train is now about to enter the tunnel, the child can occasionally be heard screaming before being hit.

Black Tombstone Shape

Further Comments: A black shadow resembling a tombstone would appear in one of the bedrooms here, emanating an evil presence. On one occasion malicious laughter was heard coming from the dark shape. There were also reports of objects disappearing for weeks on end, only to turn up in predominant places.

Grey Horse

Further Comments: Author Alasdair Alpin MacGregor reported encountering the phantom of a grey horse at an overgrown water trough near Kirkandrews upon Eden. MacGregor relayed his sighting to a local postmaster, who told him reports of the apparition were not uncommon.

Hidden Fairies

Thomas Nicolson

Gilsland Boy

Joseph Wilson

Further Comments: Wilson was a hangman who finally killed himself out of depression. A stone rope was engraved on his headstone as a tribute to his career choice, but after it was stolen, Wilson started to haunt the area. The ghost disappeared after his grave was desecrated.

Cursed Cranium

Bele Sheephead

Further Comments: A local story recounts how a young girl found her pet lamb killed by a fox - instead of mourning, she drank the blood of the lamb and was turned into a human/sheep hybrid (humeep?). This entity has now achieved urban legend status, preying on unsuspecting motorists and killing them if given the chance. The moor is also said to be haunted by a figure known as Bible John, as he carries a bible in which is hidden a pistol.

Scalded Woman

Further Comments: This woman was killed in the boiler room of a house which once stood here - her shade returned and screamed so much that the occupiers fled and the house could not be sold on.

The British Roswell?

Further Comments: A disc shaped alien spacecraft crash landed in this area. Three people witnessed the event; a farmer and son who were held by military personnel for two weeks, and a poacher who claimed to have seen two bodies, with 'faces like the Devil's' (the poacher had a breakdown soon after). The RAF (?) removed all evidence of the incident from the area.

Further Comments: While never seen, this ghost can be heard rattling its chains, trying to escape from unknown bounds.

Corpse Candle

Further Comments: On several occasions a ghostly light was seen flickering around the garden.

Horace Wimpole

Location: Carlisle - Woodland near Heatherleigh Hall

Further Comments: A former owner of the property wrote that he saw the ghost of Horace riding on a black horse several times, always just prior to the death of a loved one.

Pourer

Location: Carlisle - Citadel Restaurant

Further Comments: A tall black shape was seen emerging through a wall, pouring itself onto the ground. An old woman wearing grey was also seen here.

Solway Spaceman

Location: Carlisle - Coastal marshland NW of town

Further Comments: Jim Templeton, while taking family photographs, caught on film a strange white figure wearing what appears to be a spacesuit floating behind his daughter. Jim stated that the figure was not visible at the time of taking the photograph.

Whitfield

Location: Carlisle - Barrock Hill near Carlisle

Further Comments: An infamous highwayman, Whitfield was finally caught and hanged for murder - but the rope was not tight enough and several days later a passing coachman heard Whitfield crying and moaning, dangling from the noose. To end the suffering, the coachman shot the hanging man; Whitfield's ghost can still be heard today crying for help.

White Woman

Further Comments: This phantom was once challenged by a soldier on guard duty - she faded in front of him, and he died of shock several hours later.

Unlucky Art

Location: Carlisle - Cursing Stone, Carlisle Museum

Further Comments: Since the installation of artist Gordon Young's sculpted granite 'Cursing Stone' inscribed with a 16th century curse in one of Carlisle's museums in 2001, misfortune has plagued the city - local farm stock were wiped out by foot-and-mouth disease, a devastating flood occurred, several factories have closed, a boy was murdered in a local bakery and Carlisle United football team dropped a league.
